Three days is all it takes to understand why travellers fall for Kerala. You begin among the spice warehouses and Chinese fishing nets of Fort Kochi, climb through waterfalls and cardamom country to Munnar at 1,600 metres, then drift into the palm-fringed canals of Alleppey aboard a private houseboat. Private air-conditioned car, an English-speaking local guide and a driver who has done this road a thousand times — you simply look out of the window.
Your driver meets you at Cochin International Airport or your hotel. Spend the day in Fort Kochi with your guide: St Francis Church, the Chinese fishing nets at sunset, the Dutch Palace at Mattancherry and the Jewish Synagogue, with a wander through the spice markets and the art cafés of Princess Street. Evening free, or add an optional Kathakali dance performance. Overnight in Kochi.
After breakfast, drive up into the Western Ghats, stopping at the Cheeyappara and Valara waterfalls along the way. In Munnar visit the Tea Museum, Mattupetty Dam and Echo Point, then walk through a working plantation with a local guide who explains how the leaf becomes tea. Overnight in Munnar.
An early breakfast, then down to Alleppey to board a traditional houseboat for a four-hour cruise. Lunch is cooked fresh on board as you glide past palm-fringed canals, paddy fields and village life. Disembark in the evening and transfer back to Kochi for your drop-off.
